The Sisters of Mercy have been active for over 40 years, even though they haven’t released any new music in more than 30 years. Yet, the band led by mastermind Andrew Eldritch remains the gold standard when it comes to Gothic Rock – even if the Brit himself isn’t too fond of this classification.

The name can be traced back either to a song by Leonard Cohen, to devout nuns, or even to prostitutes. It took a mix of Punk, Psychedelic, Industrial, and David Bowie influences, along with some spicy additions from other genres, to create an entirely new style in the early 80s.

Together with bands like Bauhaus, Joy Division, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, and The Cure, The Sisters of Mercy helped lay a solid foundation upon which generations of musicians have built. Today, Eldritch and the drum machine Doctor Avalanche on drums are the only remaining members from…
